Our client’s premises were flooded; all computers, boxes of files, and office furniture and equipment were surrounded by more than a foot of dirty floodwater. A huge amount of the company’s possessions were ruined and the office was inaccessible, so employees were unable to work.

Fortunately, the online backup in place meant that our client did not suffer a permanent loss of all its data. However, the day-to-day running of the company was severely disrupted. There was a significant amount of company ‘down time’ owing to damaged equipment and temporary loss of access to data.

As the majority of the company’s paper files were lost, if GDPR was in place at the time, the client would have had to report the data loss to the ICO and face an investigation. With no disaster recovery plan in place, this would show the ICO that the company hadn’t tried to protect its customers’ data and they would likely be fined.

Storing copies of all back-ups offsite: Having multiple back-ups in separate locations allows your data to be kept secure and accessible if the original data source is damaged or lost. A backup of your critical data can be recovered, and you can be up and running in under an hour.

System Imaging
This allows us to take ‘snapshots’ of all your business’s data stored on the server, every fifteen minutes, meaning that if a disaster occurs you will lose only the most recent fifteen minutes worth of work, at a maximum.

Next Steps
Whilst our client in this example wasn’t prepared for the worst, we don’t want to see any other companies suffer the disruption, damage, and loss of money that they did.
