This amount is set to rise, as phishing scams increased by 65% in 2019.
We have recently received an increasing number of reports of a new variant of phishing scam, utilizing a common feature of web browsers.
In response, we have prepared this article to help users spot fake notifications and spread awareness of the scam.
What is the scam?
This scam is a variant of a Phishing scam, where hackers attempt to persuade users to click on a link and install malware on their device or persuade a user to divulge sensitive data through a fake login screen.
This scam makes use of the “Notification” feature now present in most web browsers, including Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Firefox.
This feature allows a web page to create a pop-up notification in a user’s “Systray”.
Users give these notifications more attention than emails or social media messages, and so phishing attacks through the Systray are much more effective.
In order to receive this attack, a user will have allowed a “dodgy” site to give them notifications, often without realizing it.
